One of the more interesting services of Contractor Support Services (CSS) is its training and certification for property preservation contractors. Contractor Support Services Certification (CSSC) recognizes the combination of education and experience in four levels:

Apprentice

Journeyer

Master and

Craftsman.

All levels are determined by experience, testing and peer review. This document explains what the levels mean, and guidelines for achieving each level of certification

Master

A Master is the principal contractor company owner that many servicers depend on, or one that stands out in quality. A Master has command of the tools and is an excellent preservationist. Generally, a Master works equivalent to full time (or more) in property preservation. Ideally, a Master is willing to share knowledge and serves as a mentor to others in the property preservation community.

Journeyer

Journeyers are the people who make it happen. A journeyer contributes significantly to property preservation jobs and may have developed innovative solutions to unique preservation problems. A Journeyer is generally a competent property preservation contractor, but significant contributions of documentation, sharing and hard work counts too. Ideally, a Journeyer works with others in the property preservation community to polish and refine techniques of the trade. While not necessarily the equivalent of full time, a Journeyer spends a significant amount of time on property preservation assignments.

Apprentice

An apprentice is someone who has contributed in some way to property preservation projects, but is still striving to acquire the skills and standing in the community to make more significant contributions. Ideally, the Apprentice is in touch with either an individual mentor or a community that helps to gain these skills. An Apprentice spends a significant amount of time learning the craft of property preservation, whether by hands-on practice, independent study, or careful observation.

Craftsman

A craftsman is a professional whose work is consistently of high quality. The Craftsman Certification is the highest level of certification given by Contractor Support Services (CSS) and is conferred only to individuals and organizations with proven superior property preservation capabilities or services to the profession. A Craftsman Certificate holder has privileges and powers within CSS not assigned to other certificate holders.
